Aiyu's Rec List

Omg you found me !
Informal yap reviews of a few of my favorite novels in certain genres / tags

Historical-ish

Three Hundred Years of Longing 不见上仙三百年 (Xianxia)
* Made my brain hurt and I love time paradoxes and stuff that makes me think. Mu Su Li does such a good job with foreshadowing and connecting incredibly complex plot points together, and seeing the story slowly unfold is so gratifying. A masterpiece.
* I'm also a huge sucker for tragic master disciple relationships (looks at 云花). I loved the helplesness of Hua Xin realizing he drove Yunhai to death with his own hands, I loved how they tragically missed each other in that lifetime, and I loved how they, along with other characters, were so important to the plot and had their times to shine. Getting to watch Hua Xin's madness cloaked in sobriety was truly so peak, and I love how his story is a commentary on my favorite theme (which I yap about in the Liu Yao section).
* Wu Xingxue and Xiao Fuxuan's relationship is also so so sweet and is such a reprieve in Shangxian's angst ocean. I have such a soft spot for outwardly cold / aloof gongs who love their shous so much, especially through their actions. Ning Huaishan and Fang Chu are so lovable as well, truly Mianwu's sons :')
Coins of Destiny 六爻 (Xianxia)
* My favorite theme of all time is "what is divinity?" and Liu Yao explores this concept so so well. I love the irony of humanity, who are inherently greedy creatures, pursuing the path of immortality, which is supposed to be a result of the shedding of ties to the mortal world. But how can one become that desireless immortal they so yearn for when the yearning itself stems from human greed?
* Priest writes such good ensemble casts and memorable characters, and I love all the parts that contribute to the novel's overarching cyclical theme, whether it be Fuyao's five forms or the passing of the past generation's torch unto Cheng Qian's generation. Also again, I'm a huge sucker for tragic master disciple relationships (looks at 如椿).
* Yan Zhengming is my goat and I love how complex and contradictory of a character he is. He is fickle yet resolute, arrogant yet self-doubting, so strong yet suffered from heart demons for a century, and he is someone who loves his found family with all his heart. I also am a big fan of how Cheng Qian and Yan Zhengming's relationship developed. It's quite subtle, but you can still feel their deep, overflowing love and care for each other, even before timeskip.
Stars of Chaos 杀破狼 (Steampunk)
* Made my brain hurt because court intrigue wowow. Yes my enjoyment of novels are directly proportional to how hard I have to think hahaha. And as per usual, priest never disappoints with her gorgeous prose and writing.
* I love love love Chang Geng and Gu Yun's dynamics YES that's our Yifu fucker. And I love how their relationship evolves from pure family (in respect to Gu Yun's perspective) to brotherhood to bone deep love.
Thousand Autumns 千秋 (Wuxia)
*Also made my brain hurt because omg geopolitics! Shen Qiao and Yan Wushi are so silly.
* I loved following Shen Qiao's journey from the bottom of the abyss back up, his unwavering morals in the face of adversity, and his kindness yet firmness and strength to back it up. Yan Wushi is a freak and a menace LMAO
* The world building is top tier. This is one of the few novels where I felt like I was reading about the mc within the story and not a story about the mc.
HM: All the MXTX novels

Infinite Flow

The Earth Is Online 地球上线
* An infinite flow like no other. The puzzles in each instance are appropriately challenging and creative, but not unsolvable. The immersion of the novel is strong and it feels more real as opposed to other infinite flows precisely because it is set on earth and not some random horror world, thus establishing negative space; plus, Tang Mo and Fu Wenduo are literally just #guys, not super op nor a god or non-human entity. The ensemble cast is developed quite nicely as well, and I like how there are side characters who can actually stand up to / are stronger than the mcs, and it's not just the mcs who set records and whatnot.
* I loved the fairy tale atmosphere and concept, and the explanation for it being because fairy tales are the beginning of human enlightenment. The ending wrapped up very well.
Welcome to the Nightmare Live 欢迎进入梦魇直播间
* My second favorite theme(?) of all time is Schrodinger's box, and this novel uses such a unique method of actualizing it! Additionally, as a time paradox lover, the overarching ouroboros theme was really enjoyable, and I loved seeing how Wen Jianyan and Wu Zhu's pasts connected together.
* The instances are so well developed that one instance alone can be a standalone novel. The Yuying University arc was probably my favorite(?), and the cast was written pretty nicely.
HM: Global Examination (全球高考), Thriller Trainee (惊悚练习生), Mist (薄雾[无限]), I Upended Yet Another Campus Urban Legend (我又弄崩了校园怪谈[无限]), Supernatural Movie Actor App (灵异片演员app[无限])

Modern

Mi Yan 靡言
* What I love so much about this novel and the two lead's character development is that Bai Yin, who values freedom the most, is willing to let himself be bound to Mochuan and face the difficulties of living in Cuoyansong for him. Whereas Mochuan, who is bound to his duty as Viṅka, is willing to set himself free and act on his mindset to be with Bai Yin. They both influence and change each other for the better. After years of separation and misunderstandings, they have completely changed, yet have not lost their true selves.
* This novel's theme of religious guilt is written so well, and Hui Nan Que's utilization of first person pov enhances the story greatly. I loved unraveling Bai Yin's past, experiencing his unreliable narrator syndrome, and seeing how he and Mochuan fall in love though his eyes.
Silent Reading 默读 (Mystery)
* “Justice may be delayed but never absent.”
* I really like the classic literature references in each arc and how they inspire their stories. The mysteries also had me on the edge of my seat.
* Fei Du and Luo Wenzhou's dynamic is really enjoyable as well!
The Seventh Year of Summer 第七年夏 (Road Trip)
* Made me cry. 10/10.
FOG (E-Sports)
* Has a very special place in my heart. Shi Luo and Yu Sui are my babies and they truly care so much for one another. Also one of the fewer E-sports novels with angst!
Fake Slackers 伪装学渣 (School / Coming of Age)
* It's been too long since I last read it but I remember I loved it a lot.
Wait For Me After School 放学等我 (School / Coming of Age)
* Those Weibo extras after Yu Fan and Chen Jingshen's separation made my heart ache.
HM: Your Distance (你的距离), Evening Stars of Southern Tibet (藏南晚星), Insights of the Medical Examiner (绝命法医)

Modern Fantasy

Panguan 判官 (Cultivation)
* The novel I'd recommend to everyone if I could only choose one, purely because it has such a human theme to it. Everyone has suffered from loss, grief, or an unwillingness to let go, and Panguan is a piece that resonates so well with those feelings and experiences. But outside of these moments, the novel is still filled with humor and life. It is a story that tells of the bonds of humanity.
* I also love Wen Shi and Chen Budao's dynamic! Our little snowman and his doting master ~ Mu Su Li you are insane.
Hui Tian 洄天 (Superpowers / Sci-fi)
* I really liked the novel's exploration of "what happens when humanity undergoes rapid evolution?" and analogizing it to the modern threat of nuclear warfare. Thumbs up from someone who has dabbled a bit in evolutionary anthropology.
* Bai Sheng and Shen Zhuo are freaks.
The Defectives 残次品 (Interstellar / Sci-fi)
* It's been too long since I last read it but I remember I loved it a lot.
HM: Haunted Places Live (诡域直播), Help (救命), Transmigrating Into the Heartthrob's Cannon Fodder Childhood Friend (穿成万人迷的炮灰竹马), My Husband is Suffering from a Terminal Illness (老攻身患绝症[穿书])

ABO

This Alpha is Determined Despite Physical Disability 这位alpha身残志坚[星际] (Interstellar / Sci-fi)
* The healthiest relationship to ever exist and the most supportive lovers who push each other to grow stronger and learn to love together. I love Bai Li and Lu Zhao so much.
* I also really liked the implementation of the theme of "the power of the masses" and how San Wan Guo Gang uses the "ants striking a tree" metaphor to convey that no matter how powerless one is to the might of a tree, the tree will eventually topple under the weight of those following after your lead. The novel also delves into class disparities into domestic violence in a decent way. A very hope-filled novel.
Imprisoned in Eternal Night 囚于永夜
* It was so angsty my god it made my heart hurt. I love Wen Ran / Li Shu with my whole heart and I wish him a lifetime of happiness and endless tasty croissants.
HM: How Long Can Your Snowman Live (你的雪人能活多久) - literally changed my brain chemistry
